Santa James: Bringing Christmas Magic to Military Families and the 10th Mountain Division
For military families, the holidays are often filled with both joy and sacrifice.
For military families, the holidays are often filled with both joy and sacrifice. While many families gather around the Christmas tree together, others find themselves separated by deployments, training exercises, temporary duty assignments, and the unique demands of military life. The holiday season can be a challenging time for service members, spouses, and children alike.
As someone who spent many years stationed at Fort Drum, New York, I understand those challenges personally.
My name is Santa James, and before I became a professional Santa Claus, I served in the United States Army and later continued my career in federal service. My connection to the military community spans decades. Because of that background, I bring more than a red suit and a white beard to every event—I bring a genuine understanding of military life and the families who support our nation's heroes.
Whether serving military families at Fort Drum, supporting a Family Readiness Group event, participating in a unit holiday party, or creating magical moments for military children, Santa James understands the unique needs of the military community.
Understanding the Military Family Experience
Military families live a life unlike most Americans.
Children may attend several schools before graduation. Spouses often manage households during lengthy deployments. Holidays may be celebrated early, late, or sometimes virtually due to operational requirements.
Military children are incredibly resilient, but that resilience often comes at a cost. They may miss a parent during important milestones, birthdays, school events, and holiday celebrations. During the Christmas season, those emotions can become even more significant.
As a veteran who spent years at Fort Drum and around the 10th Mountain Division community, I understand the importance of creating meaningful moments for these children and families.
A visit from Santa is more than just a photo opportunity.
It can be a moment of comfort.
A moment of excitement.
A moment where a child feels seen, heard, and celebrated.
Military children deserve those moments.
The 10th Mountain Division and the North Country
Fort Drum is home to the legendary 10th Mountain Division, one of the most deployed divisions in the United States Army. The Soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division have answered the nation's call time and time again, serving around the world in support of freedom and security.
With those deployments come sacrifices made not only by Soldiers but by entire families.
The North Country military community is strong, resilient, and supportive. Over the years, I have witnessed firsthand the incredible dedication of Soldiers, spouses, volunteers, and community organizations that work tirelessly to support military families.
That experience allows me to connect naturally with military audiences.
I understand military terminology.
I understand military traditions.
I understand chain of command, protocol, professionalism, and the importance of representing organizations well during official events.
This experience makes Santa James a natural fit for military holiday celebrations throughout Fort Drum and the surrounding region.
Why Unit Holiday Parties Matter
Every year, military units gather to celebrate the holiday season.
These events are much more than simple parties.
They provide an opportunity for Soldiers and families to reconnect outside of training schedules and operational requirements. They build morale, strengthen relationships, and recognize the sacrifices made by military families throughout the year.
A successful holiday party helps reinforce the sense of community that is so important within military organizations.
When Santa arrives at a unit holiday party, the focus quickly shifts to the families and children.
The youngest guests become the stars of the event.
Parents get to see smiles.
Children experience wonder.
Soldiers get a chance to relax and enjoy precious time with their families.
These moments create lasting memories that families carry with them long after the decorations have been packed away.
A Professional Santa for Military Events
Not all Santa performers are the same.
When military organizations book Santa James, they are hiring a professionally trained, real-bearded Santa Claus who understands how to engage audiences of all ages while maintaining the professionalism expected at military events.
Santa James has received professional Santa training through respected organizations including:
- Worldwide Santa Claus Network
- Northern Lights Santa Academy
- Charles W. Howard Santa School
In addition to professional Santa education, I bring decades of military and federal service experience.
That combination provides a unique advantage when working with military organizations.
I understand the importance of punctuality.
I understand event coordination.
I understand professionalism.
I understand the expectations placed upon representatives appearing at official military functions.
Whether the event is hosted by a battalion, brigade, Family Readiness Group, MWR organization, school, childcare center, or community support organization, Santa James arrives prepared to create a memorable experience.
Supporting Children With Special Needs
Military families often face additional challenges when raising children with special needs.
Large crowds, loud environments, and overwhelming sensory experiences can make traditional Santa visits difficult for some children.
Santa James has specialized training and experience working with children who have autism and other special needs.
This allows families to enjoy meaningful Santa experiences in an environment that feels safe, comfortable, and welcoming.
Every child deserves the opportunity to experience Christmas magic.
Every child deserves to feel accepted.
Every child deserves a Santa who understands that each child is unique.
More Than Just Photos
A visit with Santa James is designed to be interactive and memorable.
Depending on the event, Santa may provide:
- Individual family interactions
- Holiday storytelling
- Santa-appropriate magic
- Christmas songs
- Photo opportunities
- Interactive conversations with children
- Recognition of military children and families
- Personalized experiences tailored to the event
Military children often have wonderful questions about the North Pole, reindeer, elves, and Christmas traditions.
Those conversations can create memories that last a lifetime.
The goal is never simply to take a picture.
The goal is to create an experience.
Home Visits for Military Families
In addition to larger events, Santa James also offers private visits for military families throughout the Fort Drum and North Country region.
For families experiencing deployment, separation, or unique circumstances, a personal visit from Santa can be especially meaningful.
Imagine a child hearing Santa acknowledge how proud he is of their deployed parent.
Imagine Santa recognizing the sacrifices that military families make throughout the year.
Imagine a personalized Christmas experience designed specifically for your family.
Those moments become treasured memories that children often remember long after they have grown up.

The military community has given so much to me throughout my life and career.
Serving military families as Santa James is one way I can give back.
